Domestic Violence Counsellor (Gimli)

Responsibilities:

Provide crisis intervention, education, short and long term domestic violence and gender based violence counselling and support programs to children/youth and women who are experiencing or have been impacted by family violence. The counsellor(s) will also provide support in connecting parents to appropriate and available resources including; educational parenting programs and community programming.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Individual crisis and trauma counselling

  • Developing, planning and facilitating group sessions and workshops

  • Risk assessment, case planning and safety planning

  • Advocacy for clients

  • Create an inclusive safe environment for clients

  • Maintain confidentiality of clients and Centre

 

Qualifications: Degree in Social Services field with knowledge of Family Violence, or Applied Counselling Certificate and/or equivalent training and experience will be considered. Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) considered an asset. Two years or more experience in the domestic violence field considered an asset.

 

Additional qualifications for the position:

  •  Experience in providing counselling to children, youth and women

  •  Good understanding of the complex nature of family violence

  •  Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong written/oral communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team setting

  • Good employment record

  • Current and clear: criminal/vulnerable sector record check; child abuse registry check; adult abuse registry check

  • Provide own vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license

Information and Referral

Responsibilities:

 

Working in the reception area the candidate will greet clients as they access the Centre in person or by telephone; providing intake and triaging of clients. Administrative duties; including but not limited to use of Microsoft applications, preparing stats alongside the Executive Director and maintaining the tidiness and general appearance of the office.

Provide information and referral about IWRC and outside agencies to all clients and persons accessing the Centre. Provide an inclusive, compassionate and empathetic space to the women, children and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community accessing the Centre and its services. Candidate will manage and post daily on IWRC website and all social media platforms. Other responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications: Experience in administrative duties, experience managing social media platforms, basic knowledge of family violence, as well as knowledge of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Experience working within a family violence or social service agency considered an asset. Experience working directly with members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and Indigenous communities considered an asset. A certificate in administration considered an asset.
